CASE STUDY
Using branding to reinforce culture
The problem
Organizational change is rarely limited to new processes, policies, or leadership structures.
When companies grow, merge, acquire new businesses, or evolve over time, they often inherit different ways of working, conflicting expectations, and deeply rooted cultural habits. Even when leadership establishes a clear vision for the future, employees can continue to associate existing brands, environments, and communications with previous ways of operating.
In this case, the organization was working to establish a refreshed culture and a more unified approach to how business was conducted. However, the existing brand remained strongly connected to historical expectations and legacy behaviours.
Leadership needed a way to communicate that the organization was entering a new chapter while helping employees embrace a shared vision for the future.
Our approach
Rather than treating branding as a purely visual exercise, we approached it as a change management tool.
The objective was to create a brand that not only reflected the organization's strategic direction but also reinforced the behaviours, values, and expectations that leadership wanted to cultivate moving forward.
Creating a Clear Symbol of Change
A new brand provided a visible and tangible signal that the organization was evolving.
By retiring elements associated with previous ways of working and introducing a refreshed identity, employees could more easily distinguish between the past and the future direction of the company.
The new brand became a marker of transformation rather than simply a new logo or colour palette.
Aligning Brand and Culture
The brand was developed to reflect the organization's desired culture, values, and priorities.
Every aspect of the identity, from messaging and visual language to internal communications and employee-facing materials, reinforced the behaviours and attitudes leadership wanted to encourage.
This helped create consistency between what the organization said and what it expected from its people.
Supporting Acquisition Integration
Following acquisition activity, employees from different backgrounds often bring different assumptions, habits, and workplace norms.
The new brand served as a unifying framework that brought teams together under a common identity. Rather than asking employees to adopt one group's culture over another's, the organization established a shared future that everyone could contribute to building.
Resetting Expectations
Over time, even strong cultures can drift.
A brand refresh provided an opportunity to re-establish organizational standards, clarify expectations, and communicate a renewed commitment to the company's vision and values.
For existing employees, it served as a reminder of the organization's direction. For new employees, it established a clear understanding of what the company stands for from day one.
The result
The refreshed brand became a catalyst for organizational alignment and cultural renewal.
The initiative helped:
- Create a clear distinction between legacy practices and future expectations
- Support culture integration following organizational change and acquisitions
- Strengthen employee understanding of company values and priorities
- Improve consistency across internal communications
- Reinforce leadership's vision for the future
- Provide a shared identity for employees across the organization
Most importantly, the new brand gave employees a visible and meaningful representation of the culture the organization was working to build.
